Stewart Hopes Math Adds Up To Late NEXTEL Cup Title Surge

Two-time Allstate 400 at the Brickyard winner Tony Stewart hopes a victory Oct. 28 at Atlanta will help him chip away at a 244-point deficit to NEXTEL Cup Series points leader Jeff Gordon.

Until the math fails to add up, Tony Stewart thinks he still can win the 2007 NEXTEL Cup Series championship.

Two-time Allstate 400 at the Brickyard winner Stewart is fourth in the standings, 244 points behind leader Jeff Gordon entering the Pep Boys Auto 500 on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. There are only four races remaining on the 2007 schedule.

"Until somebody comes up and says, 'OK, mathematically you are out of it,' until then, we have a shot," Stewart said. "All we can do is just do our job. Even if we win the race for the last four weeks in a row, there is still no guarantee that we could close the gap.

"All we can do is worry about ourselves right now. It really takes the pressure off of us. All we can do is go for broke now."

Atlanta is a good place for reigning Allstate 400 at the Brickyard champion Stewart to start a last-ditch title charge. He won this event last season, one of his two career victories at the fast, 1.54-mile oval. He also led five times for 121 laps before finishing second to Jimmie Johnson this spring in the Atlanta race.

Stewart, from Columbus, Ind., has finished in the top 10 in 11 of his last 12 starts at Atlanta. The track has a certain characteristic for stock cars that favors Stewart's extensive racing experience on low-grip dirt tracks.

"Well, you move around a lot more," Stewart said of Atlanta. "The neat thing is that the times fall off so guys move around on the racetrack more. Everybody starts at the bottom, and the fast guys normally end up right around the wall midway through a run.

"I like having the flexibility to be able to move around. I know that if my car isn't driving all that well in a particular spot that I have the flexibility as a driver to move around on the racetrack. You can make a difference."
