IRL/IROC Driver Autographs, Music Part of Brickyard 400 Fun

Four stars of the Indy Racing League will sign autographs for fans at 8:30 a.m. (EST) Saturday, Aug. 3 in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s gift shop tent in the Hall of Fame Museum east parking lot.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, 2001 Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish Jr., 2000 Indy Racing champ and 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Lazier and 1996 Indy Racing co-champion Scott Sharp all will sign autographs.

The four drivers will go head-to-head with the stars of NASCAR and World of Outlaws at 1 p.m. that day in the 40-lap “IROC at Indy,” the final race of the year for the True Value International Race of Champions series.

Although NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick leads the IROC point standings, the Indy car drivers are on a roll. Lazier, who drives for Hemelgarn Racing in the IRL, won the most recent IROC race July 13 at Chicagoland Speedway, as IRL drivers captured five of the top six positions.

IROC posters featuring the entire 2002 driver lineup will be available for free. A limited number of posters will be available at the WIBC radio booth located in the Bombardier Pagoda Plaza on the mornings of Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3. Posters are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

Indianapolis-based musician Jennie DeVoe, who blends folk, funk and rock n’ roll to provide an acclaimed live show, will entertain fans with a free concert in the Bombardier Pagoda Plaza from 10 a.m.-noon (EST) Aug. 3 as well. DeVoe will also sing the national anthem before the start of IROC at Indy.

On-track activity for the ninth annual Brickyard 400 weekend will be intense. On Friday, Aug. 2, the True Value IROC Series will have three practice sessions, at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. (EST). The NASCAR Winston Cup Series will have a two-hour practice at 2 p.m. Gates open Friday at 9 a.m. local time.

Track activity on Saturday, Aug. 3 kicks off with NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying at 10:05 a.m., and the 40-lap IROC at Indy race follows at 1 p.m. NASCAR will practice from 2-2:45 p.m., and again from 3:45-4:30 p.m. Gates open Saturday at 7 a.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 4 – Race Day – the public gates open at 7 a.m., one hour earlier than the 2001 Brickyard 400. Driver introductions take place at 1 p.m., and the green flag is scheduled to drop for the ninth annual Brickyard 400 at 1:30 p.m.
