Tony Stewart's emotional victory in the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Aug. 7 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway helped propel him to Speed Channel Driver of the Year third-quarter honors.
Stewart fulfilled a boyhood dream by winning at the Speedway following an intense late-race duel with Kasey Kahne. Stewart grew up and lives in Columbus, Ind., a 40-minute drive from Indianapolis.
2002 NEXTEL Cup Series champion Stewart won five times and finished no worse than eighth in the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet during the 12-week span that comprised the third quarter for the Driver of the Year program. He earned 150 points in voting by a motorsports media panel and fan balloting at speedtv.com. 2005 Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was second in the voting, with 69 points.
Stewart will contend for overall 2005 Driver of the Year honors when the award is presented after this season. In its 39th year, the Driver of the Year program is unique because it is the only award that includes every racing series in the United States and fan participation.
